Light for our Path 2009

Light for our Path 2009
edited by Kate Hughes

Price: £8.25
Paperback - 384 pages
ISBN: 978-1-905893-01-0

Each year, IBRA produces a scheme of daily Bible readings, linked to the Revised Common Lectionary, which forms the basis for two volumes of Bible reading notes.

Light for our Path, edited by Kate Hughes, is an ideal place to start exploring the Bible. The daily notes introduce you to some of the biblical books as a whole, but they also cover a variety of themes, showing how the Old and New Testaments read together can reveal the depth, richness and relevance of the Bible for today's world. This is not a book of technical Bible study: rather, writers from all over the world and from many different churches help you to meditate on the word of God and see its relevance for your own life as they share its relevance to their lives.

Kate's career has included many years in southern Africa and she retains a deep understanding of the special requirements of individual and personal study. This year she has chosen contributors from countries such as Ethiopia, Malaysia, the West Indies, Romania, the USA, Australia, Kenya, India, and many more. Join them on their voyage of exploration and discovery through the riches of God's Word!

Books of the Bible studied this year are: St Mark's Gospel, Johannine themes, Nehemiah, Ezekiel, Hebrews, Revelation

Themes cover such diverse topics as, Who is Jesus?, Widows, orphans and aliens, Politics of God, Oneness of humanity, Eucharistic themes, Idols, Christian love, Visions of abundant life

Also published in a larger format in 2009, Light for our Path changes to a page-a-day layout, with the option of one reading at weekends. A clearer typeface, consistent style and quality paper all combine to make this an easy-to-use companion to Bible reading, and still incredible value for money.

Words for Today 2009

Words for Today, edited by poet and theologian Nicola Slee, presents a lively, fresh and often radical approach to the text. Writers are drawn from around the globe and from different traditions, including Jewish as well as Christian biblical scholars. Readers are challenged not only to reflect but also to act in the light of the readings.

Nicola Slee is a research fellow at the Queen's Foundation. Birmingham and well known for her many publications. She has a particular commitment to the inclusion of voices and perspectives which have often been marginalised in Christian tradition, and this is reflected in the range of writers in Words for Today, including artists and poets, clergy and lay people, members of religious orders, people with something to say and an ability to say it strongly. Readers do not always agree with everything they read, but they testify to the way the notes stir them up and lead them into deeper prayer and action.

Contributions for 2009 come from Jan Sutch Pickard, Pete Tobias, Brian Haymes, Lesley George Anderson, Sam Peedikayil Mathew, Maxwell Craig and many more.

Good as New: A Radical Retelling of the Scriptures

Good as New: A Radical Retelling of the Scriptures

Published by 0 Books.
450 pages. ISBN 978-1-905047-11-6

A contemporary version of the New Testament including the gospels and letters that modern scholarship now agrees were held in most esteem by the early church. The Gospel of Thomas is included but Revelation is not. There are introductions and explanatory notes. The genius of Jesus lay in his ability to put into language that could be grasped by ordinary people things that the scribes obscured by their sQphistication and pedantry. This new translation by John Henson and the One Community takes the bull by the horns in providing a translation of the early Christian scriptures in the idiom of today.

'A presentation of extraordinary power'
Rowan Williams.
